Nutrition and Body Odour: Red Meat

red meat

We have previously discussed the fact that a person’s diet “designs” their body odour. Sweating is part of a complex biological process that that can be influenced by factors such as our surrounding environment and the type of food we eat.

We know there are antiperspirants like Perspirex Plus, which can fight against the discomfort caused by excessive sweating. And it is interesting that if we simply change a couple of habits or acquire a few new ones, we can successfully help eliminate body odour.

This is the case with red meat. Some experts say that most vegetarians do not have a pungent body odour and this is mainly due to the absence of meat in their diets. Though, we do not know if this statement is necessarily true, as we have seen that certain vegetables can also negatively influence body odour such as garlic, onion, chili, cabbage, and certain spices.

The Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Humanities of Charles University, located in Prague conducted an interesting study on red meat.  In this study, researchers have attempted to relate factors such as attractiveness, persistence, durability and the effect of body odour that red meat eaters have on the opposite sex.

Here we tested the effect of red meat consumption on body odor attractiveness. We used a balanced within-subject experimental design. Seventeen male odour donors were on “meat” or “non-meat” diet for 2 weeks wearing axillary pads to collect body odour during the final 24h of the diet. Fresh odour samples were assessed for their pleasantness, attractiveness, masculinity, and intensity by 30 women not using hormonal contraceptives.

What we can infer from the results are that ladies found that the body odour of the meat eaters were less attractive, stronger, pervasive and undesirable compared to the men who did not consume red meat.

Does this mean that you should stop eating meat entirely and become a vegan? The short answer is no, what you consume is entirely up to you. If you find that giving up red meat is worth the benefit of smelling slightly more pleasant, that is your decision to make. Life is about balance and finding what works best for you in terms of happiness AND health.

If red meat is too delicious for you to abstain from, try Perspirex Plus for added protection against excessive sweat. Always to remember to Keep Calm…

Enjoy Your Summer Beach Vacation

Many of us are probably in the process of planning our well-deserved beach holiday. However, the discomfort associated with sweating can be the one thing that prevents us from fully enjoying our vacation.

For people suffering from the effects of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), you know that sweat often has nothing to do with the weather conditions we find ourselves in. Therefore, it is very important to bring along an antiperspirant such as Perspirex Plus to allow you to enjoy the holiday with your family. Perspirex Plus should be used with dry skin, preferably at night before going to bed. In the morning, you can go about your routine as normal – applying perfume and other personal hygiene products.

Since Perspirex Plus reacts with moisture, you should not use it while on the beach or swimming. You will notice that with a single overnight application over five nights will effectively eliminate excessive sweating.

Of course, we cannot become too paranoid as sweating on the beach is only natural. Remember to use umbrellas to protect you from UV rays and to wear clothes made from natural fibers to facilitate sweating. Avoiding alcohol and caffeine will also prevent the stimulation of sweat glands.

The most obvious way to cool off is probably the gigantic body of water in front of you. So jump in and go for a swim with the whole family!

Tips and Tricks to Acing this Term’s Exams

Teamwork. Three young architects working on a project

For students, exam time hits just as summer starts to heat up. Hours and hours of lectures, readings and learning are now put to the test. The thought of having to perform, and the fear of forgetting what you know, can make even the brightest student nervous. Fortunately, you’re not alone. Here are a few tips that can help make exam season smoother.

Breathe slowly

When you get nervous, you tend to breathe faster. To relax, try focusing on taking big deep breaths to regain control of your breathing. When your body and mind are both calm, free recall of information is much easier.

Remember to eat and drink

Although food and water are not at the top of the list of things you should remember before an exam, it is important that you get something to eat and drink before the exam. If you eat healthy foods, your blood sugar will be more stable, and it will help keep your brain and body going. For the same reason you should also remember to drink water so you are ready for your performance at the exam table.

Keep Cool

If you are allowed, bring in a small personal battery powered fan to the exam room. An alternative method if fans are prohibited is to bring an ice pack / cool pack to place on your neck. Keeping your body temperature down will help prevent your body from overproducing sweat.

Sleep and avoid Coffee

Yes, you have heard it a million times: you need to sleep!  Sleep is not only important for retaining information, but the right amount of sleep (7 to 9 hours per night*) will help you focus during your exam. If you find yourself reaching for a cup of coffee to wake up, you probably didn’t get enough sleep the night before. Sleepy eyes and a sleepy mind is a recipe for a shaky hand when writing that exam.

Remember Self-Confidence

Nervousness can often cause us to lose confidence, and exams are when you need it most. Be sure to wear clothes that you feel comfortable in, and be sure to use an antiperspirant that works for you, so you do not need to worry about sweat and odor on the big day.

Last but not least, remember that everything will be all right. It is just an exam after all; it certainly does not define you.

Good luck and happy studying!

9 COMMON CAUSES OF EXCESSIVE SWEATING

9 CAUSES OF EXCESSIVE SWEATINGSummer is the worst time for those who suffer from excessive sweating, but the heat is not the only factor influencing the production of sweat. Today we will tell you the most common causes of excessive sweating.

  1. Temperature: Because sweat helps regulate body temperature, it makes sense that high temperatures cause the production of sweat. This is not an exclusive phenomenon of the summer: changes in temperature and excess clothes in winter can create sweating too.
  2. Exercise: One should avoid exercising during the midday on hot summer days.
  3. Gender: Men sweat up to 50% more than women and produce acidic sweat. This is because their body composition contains more water and less fat.
  4. Hormones: Sweating increases during adolescence and menopause.
  5. Weight: Overweight people sweat more than those with a normal weight. Therefore, if you are overweight and suffer from hyperhidrosis, it is recommended that you carefully monitor your diet.
  6. Smoking: Nicotine can increase acetylcholine in your body, which is a neurotransmitter that helps ‘turn on’ your sweat glands. The best solution to this problem is to stop smoking.
  7. Diet: Spicy or very spicy foods increase sweat production as well as alcohol and diets based on animal protein.
  8. Drugs: Antipyretics (fever), some antipsychotics and medicine based on hormones can significantly increase perspiration.
  9. Stress: Emotional crises trigger sweat glands, especially on the forehead, palms, feet and armpits. Relaxation techniques are a valuable tool to keep sweat under control.

New Happy Little Bodies and Why Moisturizing is Essential in Eczema Care

Reposted from MommyConnections  MommyConnections

We first started noticing skin rashes and flare ups on my son when he was 2 years old.  Although the dermatologist told us it was mild eczema, he would scratch until his skin would become raw.  And as the weather got cooler and we started to run the furnace, his skin irritation and dryness would worsen.

We learned many tips and tricks to help, including lukewarm baths, putting a humidifier in his room in the winter months, using only gentle skin cleansers without harsh ingredients, and of course, keeping his skin moisturized.  The treatment of eczema is really a regimen, and use of an appropriate emollient is integral part of eczema management.

Moisturizers and skin protectants help soften the texture of skin and relieve severe itching caused by excessive dryness. Moisturizers also add a protective layer that helps keep the skin hydrated and helps protect the skin from irritants.

We have found that moisturizing with Flexitol Happy Little Bodies covers several aspects in our son’s skin care regimen.  At bath time, sulfate-free Happy Little Bodies Body Wash and Shampoo acts as a gentle shampoo and cleansing wash, with 1% colloidal oatmeal to help keep his scalp and skin moisturized.

We would follow-up bath time with Happy Little Bodies Moisturizing Lotion, and use it on a daily basis as part of the regimen. The moisturizing lotion with 2% colloidal oatmeal provides 24 hour moisturization, and is free from fragrance, parabens, steroids or parabens.

Finally, for more difficult skin irritations, we would apply Happy Little Bodies Eczema Relief Cream with 5% colloidal oatmeal, which helps soothe rashes and flare-ups.

One more tip for itchy skin, it’s very hard not to scratch that itch and further damage your skin – so remember to keep their finger-nails trimmed. And look for 100% cotton fabrics and avoid rough, scratchy fabrics.

You can find Happy Little Bodies in Shoppers Drug Mart and Walmart stores.

Are You an Aerophobe?

flying
Fear is one of the worst causes of sweat. The fear and adrenaline charge that comes with a scary situation triggers our sweat glands and is caused by our sympathetic nervous system. The fight-or-flight response can get us out of dangerous situations in times when nervousness and alertness levels means the difference between life and death.

For many people, flying is one of their worst nightmares. Fear of flying is called Aerophobia and represents one of the most common phobias that affect humans. The proportion of passengers with fear of flying is 1 to 3, and in some cases becomes so uncontrollable that the airlines have designed their own courses to help customers overcome this fear.

Like any other phobia, a fear of flying is experienced in different degrees. The most serious cases being panic attacks, dizziness, vomiting, severe sweats, contractures and an absolute inability to control one’s feelings. Specialists express that this is one of the easiest phobias to eliminate. Simple courses and appropriate therapeutic help can the person stop suffering the debilitating fear of flying.

Sometimes, a simple sedative can restore peace, but always after consulting your doctor and receiving a prescription. As for the unpleasant feeling of excess sweat, you can try Perspirex; an antiperspirant proven to effectively help control excessive sweating.

wedding pic 1

How do you handle situations with a high amount of stress – like weddings?

In light of the upcoming wedding season, we thought some advice on sweat control may come in handy. Weddings are beautiful, elegant occasions full of love and shared with friends and family. People love to dream about their own wedding day, but we often forget how stressful they really are. Psychologists consider weddings to be one of the most stressful of life’s typical milestones. It makes sense – the bride and groom want everything to be perfect. Unfortunately, high stress situations can be a significant source of nervous sweating.

If you’re the type of person who has sweat issues like hyperhidrosis, these high stress situation have an extra layer of difficulty. Worrying about perfection causes sweating, and this sweating makes you even more flustered, continuing the sweaty cycle. No one wants extensive sweating to distract them from what’s really important.

Don’t let sweat overshadow your day. For starters, work on minimizing the source of the stress. Choose professionals that you trust to handle all of the organization. You should have high confidence in the people who help you prepare so that you can relax and let them take the reins. It’s also good to surround yourself with positive people who help you stay calm. Once you’ve done that, you can rest a bit easier. When the big day finally arrives, choose a reliable antiperspirant that you can trust, like Perspirex. You can be assured that your day will be all about your wedding, and not your sweating.
